FAQs:
Do I need my own horse?
No! This can be completed in lessons, at home with your horse, or with any horse your coach, trainer, barn owner, or rescue coordinator says is appropriate for you to work with.
Can I participate if I take lessons but do not own or lease a horse?
Yes! Lesson students are welcome to participate. Each lesson or approved horse-centered practice session can count toward your 25 sessions.
Can rescue volunteers participate?
Yes! Volunteering with rescue horses can count when the session includes intentional horse care, handling, grooming, groundwork, observation, or mindful connection.
What counts as a session?
A session can include riding, groundwork, grooming, trail or obstacle work, driving or working horse activities, horse care, rehab exercises, liberty practice, or mindful connection time with a horse.
Do barn chores count?
Regular chores are valuable, but chores alone do not usually count unless they include intentional horse interaction, care, handling, reflection, or skill-building.
Do I have to ride for sessions to count?
No. This is a horsemanship challenge, not just a riding challenge. Groundwork, grooming, horse care, mindful connection, rehab work, and other non-riding activities can count.
Do I have to be local to participate?
No! Local and remote participants are welcome. You can complete the challenge from your own barn, lesson program, rescue, farm, or horse community.
What ages can participate?
This challenge is designed to be flexible for youth and adults. Younger riders may need help from a parent, coach, or instructor to complete workbook reflections and safely plan sessions.
Do beginners qualify?
Yes! The challenge is intentionally low-pressure and accessible. The focus is consistency, confidence, connection, and thoughtful horsemanship, not advanced skills.
Can adults participate?
Absolutely. Adult amateurs, returning riders, horse owners, and working horse families are welcome.
Can I use more than one horse?
Yes. You may complete sessions with one horse or multiple horses. Just write the horse’s name on each session log.
What if I don’t finish in time?
That’s okay—progress is what matters most. You will still receive your completion award after your completed workbook is returned.
Will I get to keep my finished workbook?
Yes! Your workbook must be mailed back for review, and then it will be mailed back to you with your award(s).
How do awards work?
Everyone who completes 25 sessions and thoughtfully finishes the workbook earns a completion ribbon. Special awards may also be given for qualities such as connection, courage, teamwork, mindful regulation, and overall growth.
Is this a competition?
No. This challenge is not based on high points, speed, rankings, or performance. It is designed to recognize effort, consistency, growth, horsemanship, mindfulness, and partnership.
How do I submit my workbook?
When you finish your 25 sessions, mail your completed workbook back for review. Return instructions will be included with your workbook and/or shared by Storm Chaser Stables.
Do I need a trainer or coach to participate?
A coach is not required for every participant, but all horse activities should be completed safely and within your experience level. Youth participants should have adult supervision.
What if my horse is injured or in rehab?
You can still participate. Rehab-appropriate activities such as hand walking, grooming, stretching, care routines, observation, and mindful connection may count when they are safe and approved by the responsible adult, vet, trainer, or caretaker.
Can driving or working horse activities count?
Yes. Driving, cart or carriage work, farm work, dragging, logging, plow work, and other safe working-horse activities may count when they include intentional horsemanship and reflection.
Do I need to post online to participate?
No. Sharing online is welcome but never required. Your workbook is the primary way to track your challenge.
What is included with the workbook purchase?
Your purchase includes the printed workbook, participation in the challenge, review of your completed workbook, and eligibility for completion and special awards.
Do I need to pay to mail my workbook back?
No. Mailed workbook packages include a return envelope with prepaid return postage so you can send your completed workbook back for review. Your workbook and earned award(s) will then be mailed back to you.
