Storm Chaser Stables

December 2022 Newsletter

Seasons Greetings to our Storm Chaser Stables farm families! Winter is starting out cold and wet, so please continue to send your kids to us in layers. Coats or jackets, socks, gloves, scarves, and hats are all a good idea of clothing items to bring or pack!

We continue to seek volunteers to help out on the farm with caretaking tasks and assisting with group activities. We are also recruiting for our growing Board of Directors. Please email us at [email protected] if you are interested in becoming involved!

Upcoming Planned CLOSURES! Our next closure for the Farm Campus will be for Winter Break! Farm School is CLOSED beginning December 19th and will resume on January 9th. All other programs (Horsemanship Classes, EAP, etc) will be CLOSED beginning December 21st and will resume January 5th. We will also be closed for ALL programs January 16th for Martin Luther King Jr Day next month.

Billing Changes for 2023! SCS LLC will be making some changes to our program rates and invoicing frequency. Upon return from Winter Break in 2023 we will begin invoicing monthly and switching to a monthly payment schedule. With the growth we’ve experienced and the time it takes to create weekly invoices for each student, this is a necessary change to keep our lead coach’s time focused on doing the important work—teaching! Current families, here’s what you need to know:

  • Invoices will be created MONTHLY for the program your child currently attends

  • Prepayment discount available—pay your whole invoice by the 4th for $10 off

  • Sibling discount available—receive $10 off each month with sibling enrollments

Horsemanship Class Pricing Updates! Over the years we have allowed families to “lock in” at their current rate as we typically increase rates each fiscal year. In the last 60 days we have experienced an unprecedented 30% increase in costs related to caring for the horses due to inflation. We want to keep our prices affordable but must cover our costs to keep offering programs featuring our favorite horses such as Lina, Punkin, Arlo, and Addie. Instead of increasing rates for new students, we feel the best way to keep classes affordable for all is to bring all current students to the same price point to help cover the horse feed bill! Pricing will shift to the following fee schedule beginning January 2023:

  • $50 per 90 minute Horsemanship Class (2+ classes per month required)

  • $40 per 60 minute Leadline Class (2+ classes per month required)

  • $35 per 90 minute SCS Equine Leasee Class (4+ classes per month required)

  • Other rates: $75/Private Lesson or $60/Single or Drop-in Lesson

Upcoming Clinic with Certified Trainer David Yauch! We are so excited to host a 3 hour clinic on Intro to Bridle-less Riding with David in January. This is the perfect experience gift for your horse crazy kid! Participants must be current SCS students. Auditors welcome! Spaces are LIMITED so please don’t delay, pre-register now!

The team began working on developing rapport and meeting training objectives when Phantom suddenly colicked last week. Phantom’s team elected to send him to Blue Ridge Equine for life-saving emergency colic surgery. He is recovering well this week and is expected to make a full recovery! Annabelle will continue to work with Phantom through his rehab period. We are helping CVHR fundraise to cover the cost of his surgery, which cost several thousand dollars. Storm Chaser Stables

May 2022 Newsletter

Hello to all of our Storm Chaser Stables Families! Summer is right around the corner and we are ready for it on the farm. As the sun comes out more and more, it’s a good idea to send the kids with a refillable water bottle, hats/sunglasses, sunscreen, and good walking shoes on their trip to the farm.

Upcoming Planned CLOSURE! May 22nd through May 29th we will be closed for our Pre-Summer break. This closure includes all on campus programs, such as farm school, horsemanship classes, and any ongoing trainings.

Summer Day Camp Update! Recently we released the dates of our nature-themed Tuesday/Thursday Horsemanship Summer Day Camp Sessions. These day camps are geared towards novice horse enthusiasts with lots of art and outdoor exploration. Each day includes mindful movement, a horsemanship activity, expressive arts, and adventures outside!

Sprouts Half Day Camps! Children 4+ are welcome to attend half day camps on Mondays and Fridays over Summer from 9am-12:30pm. These days include expressive arts and crafts, story time, outdoor play, and social emotional learning.

Register now if you plan to send your child to the farm for summer day camps!

Farm School Summer Academics! Our school year will continue over Summer. We will continue to offer academic support on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 9am-3pm. Summer academics will run as usual with our year round nature exploration curriculum, horsemanship options, social emotional learning, and of course, academic support with our on-site tutors.

Student of the Month! We have decided to begin a monthly student shoutout to those who go above and beyond when on the farm, and who better to start with than Miss Piper Rogers. This year Piper mentors horsemanship students weekly and shows her pony partner, Punkin, with the equestrian team. She often steps up when it’s time to help out on the farm, and is a fantastic role model to the other students.

Farm School Day Program Applications Open for 2022-23! Interested in Farm School for the next academic cycle? We are partnered with Acellus Academy, an online program that is fully accredited with transferrable credits. Farm School includes daily academic blocks with tutoring available to all students, mindful movement, horsemanship option on certain days, expressive art projects, nature exploration, and free play on the farm. Please note, over Summer we will only have three academic days per week.

Full Time Farm School Discount Available! Interested in Farm School full time for your learner? If you choose to commit your student to the 2022-23 school year 5 full days per week, you may receive our limited discount of 25% off if you commit by June 15th! Secure your spot now—limited discounted spaces open! Fill out this form to apply for Farm School now. A non-refundable registration fee is due to process applications and will be credited towards your first tuition payment.

Farm Preschool Accepting Applications! Preschool is open to kids ages 3-5 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 9am-12:30pm once our 2022-2023 school year begins in August. Littles attend 2-3 days per week to participate in group literacy activities, nature play, and more! Fill out this form to apply for Farm Preschool!

Homeschool Drop-in Option for 2022-23! Attention homeschoolers! We will continue to accommodate learners bringing their own curriculum (perfect for youth in need of tutoring) or drop-ins to one or more of our elective classes for socializing. Homeschool families are welcome to drop in, so please take advantage of our farm campus and knowledgeable staff! Contact us at [email protected] for more information and pricing.

Summer Working Student Availability! Only one opening left for a working student on the farm this Summer. Working students assist with feeding and caring for the horses, mentoring younger students, and other tasks in exchange for either horsemanship classes or participation in camp days over Summer.

Horsemanship Student Mentoring! We strive to facilitate learning experientially and a great way to accomplish this is by practice teaching. Horsemanship student mentors assist lower-level students and practice teach basic skills such as grooming and leading during some lessons to gain mastery of certain skills. Student mentoring is by invitation on select afternoons during the week at no additional cost. This opportunity often comes with extra pony time!

Horsemanship Class Availability Updates! Class openings are as follows:

  • Monday 4-5pm Leadline/Beginner - TWO Openings

  • Tuesday 3:30-5pm Beginner - TWO Openings

  • Thursday 3:30-5pm Intermediate Equestrian Team - ONE Opening

Jennifer Platt, SCS Owner
Storm Chaser Services LLC is operated by Jennifer Platt, who earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a Concentration in Child & Adolescent Development from Southern New Hampshire University. She has over a decade of caregiving and teaching experience, including leading 4-H groups and activities, working with at-risk youth professionally, and horseback riding instruction. Jennifer utilizes her abundant experience handling, riding, and training horses in developing a unique horsemanship program at Storm Chaser Stables.
Jennifer is an avid horseback rider, artist, and hiker. Program development at SCS was inspired by Jennifer's years of volunteerism with the Outdoor Adventures 4-H club in Fluvanna as well as her volunteer work at Wildrock in Crozet. During her undergraduate studies, Jennifer researched the effects of adverse childhood experiences on developmental trajectories and explored mitigation strategies to improve outcomes for family and youth. Her research strongly suggests that outdoor activities and hands-on experiences offer the best outcomes. Thus, youth programs at SCS are designed to allow for learning through play activities, such as games or arts and crafts, and immersion in nature and farm life adventures.
Jennifer firmly believes in developing youth- and family-friendly hands-on programs that foster social skill and emotional development in her home town. Our mission is to provide safe, engaging outdoor activities with a focus on experiential learning, essentially supporting the next generation of problem solvers. The team at SCS includes other experienced caregivers and equestrians to allow for a more balanced child to adult ratio in programs offered to the public. Stay tuned for future team member spotlights!
