October 2022 Newsletter

Happy Fall Y’all! It’s that time of year when the weather starts to shift cooler, especially in the mornings, so please send your kids to us in layers. Jackets, socks, gloves, and hats are all a good idea of clothing items to bring or pack!

We continue to seek volunteers to help out on the farm with caretaking tasks and assisting with group activities. We are also recruiting for our growing Board of Directors. Please email us at [email protected] if you are interested in becoming involved!

Upcoming Planned CLOSURES! Our next closure for Farm School will be for Indigenous Peoples Day this upcoming Monday on October 10th! Afternoon Horsemanship Classes will run as usual at 3:30pm on this date but the school side will be closed. Following that, our next planned closure is in November! Farm School will be closed November 21-25 for Thanksgiving Week. We will hold afternoon Horsemanship Classes on November 21 & 22nd as usual but the rest of the week will be closed for the holiday. To recap:

  • Farm School Closed Oct 10 & Nov 21-25

  • All Programs Closed Nov 23-25

Student of the Month! This month we would like to recognize Noah Garrett-Redmond, one of our leadline lesson rockstars! Noah loves helping his friends at the farm get ready for their horsemanship sessions and doing chores for the horses. He arrives with a positive attitude and has fun working on his goals in horsemanship. We are proud of you, Noah!

New Merch Drop! Our winning t-shirt design for the 2022 contest has been digitized and dropped in our merchandise shop. Please check it out and consider purchasing to help support our equine partners and program development! Congratulations to Miss Sophia Boone for winning the T-Shirt design contest!

Farm School Day Program Rolling Admission Available! We have limited spaces open for full or half days at Farm School on Monday, Wednesday, Friday! Our unique school modality allows learners to receive tutoring, play outside, learn about the rhythms of nature, and participate in horsemanship activities. This year we continue to partner with Acellus Academy, an online program that is fully accredited with transferrable credits. Farm School includes daily academic blocks with tutoring available to all students, mindful movement, horsemanship option on certain days, expressive art projects, nature exploration, and free play on the farm. Learners may attend with flexible scheduling options—please contact us with your family’s unique academic needs!

SCS Equestrian Team Update! We attended our last horse show in August with the team. They did a wonderful job taking care of their ponies, staying safe, and exhibiting good sportsmanship at the event. We will be visiting Silver Star Farm again on October 15th for another show! Cheer them on at the event or wish them good luck in passing. Go Team SCS!

Interested in the show experience for your child? SCS Equestrian Team membership is offered by invitation to horsemanship students who exemplify our farm’s core values of kindness, safety, horsemanship skillset excellence, and sportsmanship. Team members are eligible to attend off-site events, such as shows and group trail rides!

CVHR 2023 Youth Trainer Challenge! For the second time, one of our very own was chosen to participate in Central Virginia Horse Rescue’s Youth Trainer Challenge! Annabelle was paired up with Phantom, a 17 year old Trakehner cross gelding in need of training. The team began working on developing rapport and meeting training objectives when Phantom suddenly colicked last week. Phantom’s team elected to send him to Blue Ridge Equine for life-saving emergency colic surgery. He is recovering well this week and is expected to make a full recovery! Annabelle will continue to work with Phantom through his rehab period. We are helping CVHR fundraise to cover the cost of his surgery, which cost several thousand dollars. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to Team Phantom to help cover the cost of his care!
