Storm Chaser Stables

July 2023 Newsletter

Happy Summer to our Storm Chaser Stables farm family! We are having a great time on the farm so far this season. Please continue to dress for the weather and pack refillable water bottles, hats, sunglasses, rainwear and bug spray/sunscreen to your child’s bag to bring to the farm.

We are looking again for a third Board Member to continue filing as a nonprofit! Interested in joining the board or have a candidate in mind? Please email us at [email protected] to inquire! As always, we continue to seek volunteers to help out on the farm with caretaking tasks, maintenance, and assisting with group activities.

Upcoming Planned CLOSURES! We will be closed July 3-4 for Independence Day! Following that, our next closure for the Farm Campus will be July 31st through August 6th in which no programs will be running for our post summer break. Horsemanship Classes and EAP will resume the week of August 7th as usual and Farm School Day Program will resume the week of August 14th!

2nd Annual Student Showcase Horse Show July 27 Field Day & Awards July 28 Let's Party!
Register Now for SCS 2023 Student Showcase!

2nd Annual Student Showcase! At the end of our summer sessions, we will be hosting our 2nd Annual Student Showcases at SCS. This year we opted to split the showcase into two days, one for the horse show and one for field day and awards. The student Horsemanship Showcase will be held this year on July 27 at 10am! Students may arrive as early as 8:30am to prep for their coach-selected classes. Horse Show attendance fees are lowered this year to $20/current student and $60/past students—these funds go directly to our guest judges’ fees. SCS Equestrian Team members may mentor the event and show at no charge. Our Field Day & Awards Ceremony will be held on Friday July 28. Field Day will be 9am-12:30pm and Awards will begin at 2pm. Family members attending either day may gift at $5 donation per person to help cover lunch costs. Please confirm your youth’s attendance in the Showcase this year so we can plan another fun event!

Summer Sessions - Limited Availability in July! We currently have minimal openings for the last three summer sessions. Those dates are Wild Weather week July 10-14 and Mysterious Moths week July 17-21. These fun day camps are available for full or half day options and include horsemanship instruction, group games, nature exploration, and arts & crafts each week. Please fill out the Summer Day Camp Registration Form to secure your spot on the Farm Campus for each session you plan for your child to attend!

Here we GROW again! Farm School is Expanding August 2023!

What’s Farm School Like? Our unique school modality allows learners to receive tutoring, play outside, learn about the rhythms of nature, and participate in horsemanship activities. Learners are encouraged to bring their own curriculum if not working with our partner, Acellus Academy. Farm School includes daily academic blocks with 1-1 tutoring available to all students, mindful movement, horsemanship option on certain days, expressive art projects, nature exploration, and free play on the farm.

Exciting News—We’re Growing Again! SCS Farm School will be expanding to include a larger building as our new classroom on the Farm Campus beginning in August 2023! We are simplifying our monthly rate structure and offering discounted quarterly and annual rates this year. Co-Operative Volunteer Leader spots available! Parents interested in regular volunteer leader roles on the farm may exchange volunteer time for learner attendance in the program. Lastly, we are working hard to secure funding to allow more scholarship attendees. Please contact us with inquiries!

SCS Equestrian Team Update! Our team has grown this year to welcome another kind and dedicated Horsemanship Student, Ms. Riley Tucker! The Travel team kicked off the year attending horse shows in Spotsylvania and Doswell so far. Our horses and students have continued to work hard supporting each other, prioritizing their horses, and displaying good sportsmanship. Stay tuned for more team updates!

Interested in the team experience for your child? SCS Equestrian Team membership is offered by invitation to horsemanship students who exemplify our farm’s core values of kindness, safety, horsemanship skillset excellence, and sportsmanship. Contact us to learn more!

Youth Training Foster Updates! Due to student interest in the program, we now have two training fosters from two rescues! Phantom is still on-site working through his training goals with Annabelle. Despite some health-related hiccups for our youth trainer, Phantom is steadily growing into a respectful citizen learning the ropes of his job to become a riding horse. We continue to fundraise with Central Virginia Horse Rescue for the care of Phantom and the other youth trainer horses! Our second training foster is Barney, a mini gelding. He is in from Stateline All Animal Rescue for summer camp handling by youth. So far he is loving the attention and learning a lot about basic groundwork and respect from our staff and students!
